Keeping up with the news

I usually pride myself on keeping up with what's going on in the world. Just a moment ago, for the first time ever, I scored a resounding zero out of seven in the BBC's weekly news quiz. Obviously I'm losing my touch. You try it.

If it make you feel any better, Private Beach, I'm a news editor by trade and scored 1 out of 7 out of pure dumb chance.
Then again, this "news" quiz was entirely about celebrity charity works, quasi-celebrity reality shows and washed-up celebrities during "panto" season. The only headline in the whole thing was "Vicar defends local sex clubs."

So... what happened to Richard Holbrooke and Julian Assange?

Maybe you should be flattered you did badly! :)

True, this was an unusually vapid week's quiz. I can't say I really care whether I know who won the X Factor or not, since with rare exceptions "talent shows" don't seem to feature much actual talent.

4/7 which I understand entitles me to "polite applause". In my defense: All guesses.

"The throwaway-Kleenex TV programs and magazines, the junk thought, the affirmations of the unbelievable, the garish music, the suffocating ignorance, the language unrooted in lived human experience -- this is the muck we swim in, and even though we despise it, some of it sticks."

Disagree with the author, don't get comments published...
Fine with me.

I had the same experience. I got zero, which I rationalised as being due to the non-news nature of the questions.

Don't jump to conclusions, jb - the delay in publication was entirely because for a whole week I was away on holiday and didn't go near a computer except to check in for my return flight. I'm happy to publish all relevant comments, whether they coincide with my views or not - I only moderate comments to filter out spam.

I must be getting smarter. I got 7 out of 7 right for the first time this week.
